Celebrating Independence Day here!

Mrs. Maddie made blue, green, and yellow hats for us!  And that day we could wear blue, green, and yellow to school instead of our uniform.  Some kids chose to wear whatever they wanted:)

We had flag cupcakes for snack.  Can you tell we loved that treat?

My nephew with his flag getting ready for the parade.

Pax with his flag!

The festivities included military firing rounds and a marching band.

They even had green snow cones and cotton candy!

Can you pick us out in the stands?

Here we are with Bro. Sherman, he is here visiting and teaching.  The students think he is the funniest teacher, as he has so many tricks to show them.  Today he was even dancing at the festivities!

Some of our students picked front row standing seats.

Date Night

We got to enjoy 2 hours away from our fun-loving kids.  Since my sister Jenna was here, she volunteered to watch our kids and we got to go to a local restaurant by ourselves.  Such a treat!  She actually did it 2 evenings, so one evening we got to spend with the WISE staff downtown hanging out.  It was so fun being together and walking around and talking to one another.

These pictures are from our date.   I thought some may be interested in the food here, which was delicious, nearby, and reasonable priced.

Even though Brice wears a shirt and a tie every day to teach in, getting him in a polo shirt was dressed up for him!

My yummy pumpkin soup - the best!

Brice got callalou soup and though it sort of resembled sewage in looks, it was so tasty!  It is made from greens similar to our spinach.

My hamburger and fries.  Hey, beef is rare here:)

And Brice got roti- a local favorite of curry, chicken, potatoes wrapped in a pastry.  You just have to come visit to try it all!

Student of the Month

This year (thanks to the Keller's for adding some new ideas) we started having "Student of the Month".  It is based on
W. ork ethic
I. nitiative
S. elflessness
E. xcellence

After the staff votes on the student who best exhibited these qualities they get to choose from either a day free from "kitchen duty" or pick to have their favorite meal put on the school menu .  Then, they are also rewarded with going with a staff member to KFC or picking toiletries from a local store (no- we do not have a McDonalds like everyone else, but we do have a KFC just down the road).

This is one way we can show positive reinforcement at the school and encourage them.  And we love seeing them succeed!

And the winners are . . . Alertha Adams for 2nd year and Rodney Jusme for 1st year!

Our electronics instructor Bro. Matthias teaching some of the students.  Such a neat opportunity to learn a side skill to be able to earn extra money while in the ministry.  It is amazing what they learn in the class - how to fix microwaves, tv's, even our printer the other day!

Lunch time - rice and chicken!

Partnering with Southwest

Thank you, Southwest Christian Church in Fort Worth, TX!  They support WISE monthly in giving and prayers.  This month we were in need of adjunct teachers...so they sent their pastors to come help teach.  Not only were they incredible teachers and speakers, but now they are friends, encouragers, and mentors.

Minister Brandon Groome encouraging us.  He and his wife were missionaries in China before coming to Southwest, so what a blessing to have his helpful insight from the field.

Minister Stacy Hildebrand teaching during chapel time.

Adoption Love

If you missed this news, our family has had a little boy living with us for the last 2 and half months.  He lived on the streets with his mom and she could not longer care for him, since he kept getting sick.  So, my sister and brother-in-law fell in love with him and started the process to adopt him.
And....what a blessing my sister got to come this week (thanks to all the grandparents for watching her girls) and spend time with me.  I love having my sisters as my best friends.  And I am so loving the time to have her close to chat.  But, I also love seeing her and her son together.  Here is the reunion at the airport:

We were blessed at her lawyer visit today and it looks like prayers for him to go home with her at Christmas may happen!

The Active Volcano Visit

The "rope" which takes you into the crater.  A little mixture between repelling and rock climbing!

The lava dome inside the crater

A different look at the lava dome and inside the bowl

Smoke or steam coming from vents on the lava dome

The backside of the lavadome inside the crater and the edge of the crater lake

Part of the joy of living on an exotic island is getting to explore and see more of the beauty of His creation.  This past weekend I went with the Kellers (other staff members), an adjunct teacher visiting and a friend from the church to hike the volcano.  It was the clearest day which is very rare as we are able to go inside the crater, which made us feel very small and see the power of the volcano.  It was amazing! - Brice
